The Cask of Amontillado

THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could ; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged ; this was a point definitively settled - but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved, precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.

It must be understood, that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.

He had a weak point - this Fortunato - although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit. For the most part their enthusiasm is adopted to suit the time and opportunity - to practise imposture upon the British and Austrian millionaires. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen , was a quack - but in the matter of old wines he was sincere. In this respect I did not differ from him materially : I was skilful in the Italian vintages myself, and bought largely whenever I could.

It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand.

بر اساس تعاریف موجود، شايسته‌سالاري (meritocracy) به نوعي سيستم مديريت گفته مي‌شود که در آن افراد بر اساس پايه توانايي و شايستگي‌شان برگزيده شوند، بدون توجه به قدرت مالي يا موقعيت اجتماعي و فاميلي. سير تحول دنيا و سرعت تغيير در عصر حاضر به گونه اي است که نياز به نيروي انساني متخصص را دو چندان کرده است. در اين ايدئولوژي افراد مناسب در مکان و زمان مناسب منصوب شده و از فرد منتخب بهترين استفاده در راستاي اهداف فردي، سازماني و اجتماعي و حتي آموزشي به عمل مي آيد.

North Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street except at the hour when the Christian Brothers' School set the boys free. An uninhabited house of two storeys stood at the blind end, detached from its neighbours in a square ground. The other houses of the street, conscious of decent lives within them, gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces.

The former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing-room. Air, musty from having been long enclosed, hung in all the rooms, and the waste room behind the kitchen was littered with old useless papers. Among these I found a few paper-covered books, the pages of which were curled and damp: The Abbot, by Walter Scott, The Devout Communicant, and The Memoirs of Vidocq. I liked the last best because its leaves were yellow. The wild garden behind the house contained a central apple-tree and a few straggling bushes, under one of which I found the late tenant's rusty bicycle-pump. He had been a very charitable priest; in his will he had left all his money to institutions and the furniture of his house to his sister.

علاوه بر استفاده از درمان هاي مرسوم و معمول و پيروي از توصيه هاي پزشک معالج راهکارهاي ارائه شده مي تواند در کنترل حساسيت هاي فصلي بسيار موثر باشد. مصرف انتي هيستامين تنها راه مقابله با آلرژي هاي فصلي نيست. راه هاي طبيعي هم براي کنترل اين ناراحتي وجود دارد که عبارتند از:

1- خانه خود را بازبيني کنيد. اگرچه کمي دور از ذهن است اما محيط هاي کوچک داخلي مي توانند اغلب براي حساسيت شما مضرتر از محيط هاي طبيعي بيرون باشد. خانه با داشتن مبلمان و بالش هاي پوشيده شده از انداوع پارچه، مواد چوبي و پنجره هايي که براي صرفه جويي در انرژي مهر و موم شده اند در نتيجه تبادل هوا بين داخل و خارج بسختي صورت مي گيرد و همچنين فضاهاي گرم و نمناک مانند معدني از منابع حساسيت زا عمل مي کنند. تحقيقات نشان مي دهند که فضا هاي داخلي مي توانند تا 10 برابر بيشتر از محيط هاي خارجي آلوده باشد و شديد تر هم تاثير بگذارند و اين درحالي است که ما 90 درصد وقتمان را در فضا هاي داخلي و بسته مي گذرانيم. بنابراين بررسي تمام مواد به کار رفته براي پيدا کردن منابع حساسيت زا و پاک سازيشان اهميت زيادي دارد (محل خواب، فرش، محل هاي مرطوب و فيلترهاي هوا محل هاي احتمالي هستند) .

تحقيقات نشان داده است بزرگسالاني که شکلات را به طور منظم مصرف مي کنند نسبت به افرادي که اينگونه نيستند انسان هاي لاغرتري هستند. محققان بر اساس مطالعات اين فرضيه رامطرح کرده اند، مصرف منظم و متعادل شکلات سبب ايجاد تعادل درميزان کالري بدن مي شود، از مزاياي تاثير سوخت و ساز خوردن متعادل شکلات در بدن، کاهش رسوب چربي در هر کالري است و تقريباً سبب جبران کالري اضافه شده مي شود. اين اتفاق در نتيجه مصرف مکرر وهر چند کم شکلات بر اساس وزن فرد حاصل مي شود.
